इन्द्रियस्येन्द्रियस्यार्थे रागद्वेषौ व्यवस्थितौ ।तयोर्न वशमागच्छेत्तौ ह्यस्य परिपन्थिनौ ॥

For each sense, attraction and aversion toward its objects stand fixed. One should not come under their sway — for those two are his highway robbers.

Original plain-language translation

Since suppression fails (verse 33), here is what actually works: refusing to obey the twin pull of like and dislike at the sense-gate. They ambush the traveler like bandits on the road. Freedom lies not in blind senses but in unenslaved ones.
