श्रीभगवानुवाच ।काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः ।महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम् ॥

The Blessed Lord said: It is desire, it is anger, arising from the quality of passion — the great devourer, the great evil. Know this as the foe here.

Original plain-language translation

One enemy with two faces: desire gratified or thwarted becomes anger. Born of rajas, it devours merit like an unappeasable fire — verse 39 will call it insatiable. Naming the foe precisely is the first step to defeating it.
